Growing our Red Vein and Blood Vein sorrel is quite straightforward. A little more patience is required as they are slower to grow than some of our faster varieties such as Broccoli, Radish and Mustard.
It is most certainly worth the wait. Our Blood Vein and Red Vein sorrels will add colour and a distinct lemony tang to a variety of dishes both savoury and sweet alike.
Here is a basic guide to help you get started.
Step-by-Step guide
- Prepare your tray or pots with a moist growing medium. Preferably soil or coconut coir.
- Sprinkle the seeds evenly on top, the coverage needs to be dense as the seeds are small, then pat them down firmly.
- Mist the seeds evenly with water.
- A blackout period is ideal for 3-5 days. Mist the seeds daily during this period and until germination to keep the surface moist
- Once germination has begun (7-14 days) remove the cover and place the trays under grow lights or on a sunny windowsill.
- Growing time can vary but is generally slower than other microgreens. (16-25 days)
The vibrant red micro veins will develop as the plants begin to grow. This will happen at an earlier growth phase with our Blood Vein Sorrel as the seed has been specifically selected for microgreen production.
Helpful tips
- Ensure good ventilation in the growing space to minimise the risk of disease.
- Red and Blood Vein sorrel are best grown with a soil temperature of 18-24°C.
- Harvest the microgreens when they are 2-3 inches tall.
- Avoid alkaline soil conditions as sorrel prefers slightly acidic soil.
- Consider supplemental lighting if natural light is insufficient.
- Shelf-life ranges from 5-10 days. Wash before serving.
